Boone Railroad Historical Society

The Chicago and North Western Railroad purchased the area rail line in 1968 and decided not to use some portions of it. A group of concerned citizens devoted to the preservation of the track founded the Boone Railroad Historical Society (BRHS) in 1983 and The Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad and Museum was born.

Visiting Ortley Beach, New Jersey

[ad_1]

While the New Jersey seashore is not nearly as popular as places like Florida or the Caribbean, the many vacation towns along the beach in NJ collectively play host to millions of visitors every year. One of these summer destinations is an unincorporated area of Toms River which is known as Ortley Beach. It is fronted on the east by the Atlantic Ocean and on the west by Barnegat Bay. Its neighboring communities include Lavallette, to the north, and Seaside Heights, to the south. It is nice place to bring your family or to enjoy the company of a group of friends. If you do want to stay though it is best to rent a house. There is only one hotel in Ortley Beach, although there are many more places to rent a room for the night in nearby Seaside Heights.

What can you expect to find on a visit to Ortley Beach and what can you do for fun once you do arrive? Let’s look at your options.

The beach is of course the largest draw for most visitors. There are two boardwalks fronting much of the rough mile long public beach. They are divided by a local nightclub and beach bar, the Surf Club. You will need to have a badge to access the beach during the summer. The fees vary depending on the amount of time the badge is valid (daily, weekly or seasonal). The badge fees help pay for the cost of keeping the beaches protected by lifeguards. There are also a few public bathrooms, which is oddly not something that you can easily find along many public beaches in NJ.
allegiant reservations
After your day at the beach is done you could go to take part in the loud and raucous Surf Club. The popular nightclub often has live acts or popular DJs. The Surf Club is also open during the day, serving drinks and food from their patio to folks that can walk right up from the beach.

Another interesting local place to go have some fun is Barnacle Bills Arcade. There is a miniature golf course – with 18 holes of course! There is also an arcade that features, among other things, video games and pinball. Adjacent to the arcade you can also find a snack bar that serves some easy to prepare fare and ice cream.

Many visitors to Ortley Beach also leave town to go have some fun, with one big destination in mind. This is the boardwalk at Seaside Heights. The boardwalk is as long as the entire Ortley Beach beachfront. You can find rides, games of chance, shops, food and more at Seaside. It is well worth the trip and it is less than a mile away. On Wednesday nights, you can also watch the Seaside Heights fireworks show. You can watch them with the crowd on the Seaside Heights boardwalk or have some more elbow room, with almost as good of a view, from the beach in Ortley.

The best thing of all, as is the case with many beach vacations, is to just take it easy. There is plenty of this to be had in Ortley Beach too. Hopefully you can have a chance to visit yourself sometime soon.

October Deer Hunting Tips

[ad_1]

Bow hunting seasons are now open in most states. Here in Wisconsin we have been hunting for a few weeks now. We have passed up shots at some smaller bucks. The bigger deer have failed to show themselves yet.

Now is the time to hunt close to the bedding areas. The deer have sensed the change in the seasons and have noticed the increased human activity in the woods. The mature bucks will most likely stay bedded until just before dark, so set as close to the bedding area as you can without spooking the deer. I watched a doe come out of the swamp h hour before dark, but no bucks came out.

This weekend us here at AWH will be heading to Iowa for our first hunt down there this year. Our goal is to bring back three big does. The farm we hunt has a lot of does and we need to our part in trimming the herd. By shooting a few does, we will help keep the buck / doe ratio more balanced. This will cause more competition for the breeding bucks, come November. This will make the bucks to respond better to calling, rattling, and decoying. The second thing that shooting does will do is that there will be less deer eating the farmers crops, and it's good to keep the farmers happy. He will be more apt to let you hunt if your do him a favor by shooting more deer. So if you have a doe tag, now is the time to fill it. You can then be very selective with your buck tag.

October is also a good time to hunt different stands then you normally hunt. I have a tendency to hunt a certain stand that has always produced good bucks in the past. But it is set close to the bedding area and I believe that the bucks will sit tight till dark and then they here you get down from your stand and walk out of the woods. When this starts happening it's time to let that stand rest for a while. I will then hunt other stands that I do not hunt too much. You may catch deer leaving the bedding area from a different direction and get a shot at them by hunting the other stand.

We have scouted out some new hunting areas the last time we were in Iowa, so this weekend we will hang a stand or two in the new spots and hunt them a few times. You must always be looking for new spots to hunt, unless you buy the land yourself, you will ever lose it. We always are looking at new places to hunt. On this hunt we will hunt the mornings and evenings, and then scout during the middle of the day. Hopefully we will come across and great, new honey hole.

As October progresses, It will be the time that I start hunting mornings, I do not hunt mornings too often during the early part of the season. I have found that the mature bucks have usually gone back to the bedding area by first light. But as we get to the later part of the month you will start to see some scrapes and rubs made by the younger bucks as they start sensing that some does coming into heat. This is the time to start doing some calling and rattling. This technique has worked for me in the past. I hunted a Saturday morning in late October, I was sitting in my funnel stand and I decided to do some rattling. A half hour after I rattled I looked to the north toward the funnel and a deer with nice polished antlers was looking my way. I got ready and as if on cue, it moved in front of me and I drew when it went behind a tree. It stepped out into one of my shooting lanes that we had cut way back in August, and I put the pin on it and I watched my arrow disappear into its chest. It was a great feeling when all are hard work paid off and everything went to plan.

Are you still shooting your bow? It is always a good idea to keep shooting during the season to keep sharp. I keep a target in my truck and before I go into the woods I shoot a few practice arrows to make sure that I am still on. You do not need to shoot 100 arrows every day; you just need a few here and there to keep yourself sharp.

If you are experiencing the dreaded "October Lull" have faith the deer will be on the move again. Hunt some less disturbed stands, hunt at different times, keep shooting and remember that the rut is only a few weeks away.

Good Luck and shoot straight,

Trampolines Throughout History – From Toy to Tool

[ad_1]

Millions of people around the world enjoy the exercise and entertainment that a backyard trampoline can provide. From calorie burning jumps to core muscle building balancing exercises, there are more ways to get a workout while having fun on a trampoline than any other piece of sports equipment. But have you ever wondered how this rebounding marvel came to be? Here are some facts about the history of the trampoline and how it’s simple collection of trampoline parts work together to provide you with a once in a lifetime bouncing experience that you’ll never forget.

Have you ever seen trapeze artist perform in a circus? Swinging back and forth high above the big top, these highly trained gymnasts depend on the safety net below to keep them from a serious fall or injury if they were to miss the bar during one of their tricks. Back in the 1930’s a man named George Nissan was watching just such a performance when he was inspired to make the trampoline. He noticed that when the trapeze artists dismounted into the safety net, the elasticity of the net would send them back up into the air for one last flip or trick before they swung onto the ground.

Nissan thought that it would be wonderful if he could construct a trampoline mat that would provide this same bouncing ability to the athletes over and over again. That way, gymnasts could work on their flips, twists, and jumps without needing to climb back up and down the tall trapeze tower. Nissan assembled an iron frame and a canvas trampoline mat, and attached the two together with large metal springs. The result was the first modern trampoline, and even trampolines made commercially today still follow this simple design.

By the 1940’s Nissan and his business partner were happily manufacturing trampolines out of their Cedar Rapids, Iowa factory, and thousands of children were busy bouncing around in their yards and school gyms. Then, when World War II broke out a few years later, the Armed Forces placed a big order for trampolines. They discovered that these toys could be useful tools for training pilots and navigators how to respond quickly in inverted, weightless situations. Those who were afraid of heights or falling could be taught to jump on the trampoline, and soon their fears were greatly reduced. It’s amazing to think how many uses this simple machine actually has.

Flashbacks Of Korea

[ad_1]

A local Korean War veteran stopped to help us the last time Mom’s truck broke down. His offer was gratefully accepted as my feet began to burn through my sandals during a 103-degree Texas day. When we returned home, he called.

He had followed our tow truck to the repair shop and wanted to make sure we had enough to cover the bill. We didn’t. He allowed me to clean his house three times to cover the bill. He even came and picked me up.

His generosity and sensitivity were touching. Hearing his story was bittersweet. He had fought in the Korean War and returned to Deep East Texas to build a life with his ‘sweet girl from Iowa’ Darlene who became his bride. The couple raised three children before her passing.

Once we decided that I could share his story over our third lunch-all Mexican food. He would attempt to share about his time in Korea and stop. The memories were too much and they obviously triggered fear.

At 19, he absorbed the hell of war in the uniform of the Unites States Air Force. When he boarded a bus on the West Coast, he left parades and dignitaries behind. There was much fanfare for the returning servicemen-a stark difference to the reception later given to the Vietnam War veterans.

His home, as well as his mind, is filled with remnants of the past. Now alone, he carries on by involving himself in the lives of his three children and grandchildren. His old white Ford truck is still adequate transportation-broken windshield and all.

The nightmares started a few months before he left Inchon, Korea for good. The impact of fighting in the Korean War would be felt by the Air Force Sargeant John D. Williams for years. He caught ‘war fever’ and brought it home to Nacogdoches.

After he kissed the ground along with other war veterans as throngs of people cheered, he collected his $1600 pay and boarded a bus to Deep East Texas. He still remembers an early investment he made in land in the Piney Woods at $64 per acre.

In less than two years of combat, the sights and sounds of Korea changed the 19-year-old serviceman forever. Terrifying nightmares, which began a few months before returning to the U.S., still wake him up occasionally. In medical terms, it’s called PTSD-Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

There was a time when there was no cure, only short-term relief. Today, that might be changing. Some war-stressed veterans, like Mr. Williams, have endured decades without answers, only symptoms. There is no chemical relief from this ailment but that hasn’t stopped thousands from trying to self-medicate. Addictions are common to PTSD sufferers.

Science and psychology are merging in new ways to unlock the places that hold such trauma for these former servicemen. While he has carried the wrath of war fever since his time in Korea, research may spare the next generation of veterans the same fate.

Guided imagery, CBT-cognitive behavioral therapy-and even groundbreaking robot technology that provides anonymous assessments to possible sufferers of PTSD are making inroads to treatment that work. Going back in a controlled, but altered state, may retrieve better answers and resolution from the jagged experiences.

The Korean War was between North and South Korea. It began on June 25, 1950, when North Korea invaded South Korea following a series of clashes along the border. It ended July 27,1953. Regarding the current state of affairs between the U.S. and North Korea, Williams believes, “Fooling with Kim Jong-Un is dangerous. He’s lied too many times.”

Where Can I Drive My Go Kart? Seems Illegal in Most Places

[ad_1]

Most people get glassy eyed when they see a go kart (people who love go karts that is) and tend to forget about where in the world they are going to drive their go-cart.

Sometimes the images in your mind go to race tracks and passing Ferraris, but "Really now! Are you going to be driving this thing on a race track?"

I received this email from a reader about go karts (and sadly it is a common question)

Hi, I got stopped by a police officer for operating my go kart on the sidewalk, and he said I could be charged with: Operating a vehicle without being licensed, driving to stranger, driving a non-certified vehicle, and told me I had to be over 18 to operate any gas powered anything. I understand now that I can not drive a go kart anywhere very much but where should I go?

Because the question "Where Am I Going To Ride This Go Kart?" was not asked at the outside, now you have a very depressed individual, considering getting rid of the gokart all together.

One issue is about "Where" the other about "Age."

I am not legal authority, but I can tell you some basics: Un = Liscensed motorized vehicles can not drive on roads.

About the age, that varies from state to state.

You need to look into your state statutes and codes to get verification on legal data. Consult a local attorney for that informaton …
But that aside, it is a good idea to know where you will be driving this go kart.

In your driveway?

On your uncles farm?

(Obviously not on the street because that is against the law)

In cornfields?

In your yard?

Do you have a big enough yard to ride a go kart?

Are their laws against go karts in your neighborhood?

Have you permission to ride it in the parking lot across the street?

Riding a go kart involve more than just you on a gokart.

It affects people around you in the following ways:

– A go kart is a driving projectile.

– A "unknown talent" is setting its course.

– The coarse is not set, but can change from moment to moment.

In short a go kart coupled with a driver is like running with the bulls in Spain.

Those around the go kart have no clue as to whether it is going to strike them or not.

So before you get upset that you can not drive it "anywhere" realize that people around you have to take on a burden. A burden of concern and care. Will they, or you get hurt?

There are Legalities

Furthermore, the Go Kart is not legal on the roads for various reasons, primarily because of its low profile (people can not see you) and its lack of many other essential road handling and accident preventitive components.

This set of questions is probably the most difficult to acknowledge, because there are so many obstacles. And I do not mean trees and cars, I mean regulations about motor vehicles. You can not just blast down the road with your go kart. Sounds like a fun idea, but in reality it is dangerous and against the law.

If you end up buying this go kart, or even making it, you may end up with a very depressing set of conclusions:

I can not ride it anywhere!

And even if I could, I can not put it in the car to get it where I want to ride (its too big)!

So ask the question first. Get an answer.

The answer maybe as simple as networking with some people to find a place to ride: ie your uncles farm! (but there is even more than just your uncle at stake there too … remember there are 10 questions, not six)

There are various go karting clubs out there and you can join them. You do not have to be a go kart racer to join these clubs, it is just place where you can enjoy the go kart. Be sure to get in contact with them in your area before investing in the go kart and all that goes with it (ie helmuts, gloves, suits, etc ..)

And finally, I did some digging of my own on riding gokarts on trails. There are usually stipulations on what type of go kart you can ride on a trail. For example in the state I live in, the trails require that the go kart have suspension and a full roll cage by a reputable manufacturer. You will also need to get a permit. The age of the drivers is also limited.

So look into ATV trails and see what you come up with.

Is The Secrecy of a Land Trust Lawful?

[ad_1]

Land Trusts (LT) have been used in the United States for over 100 years, primarily for privacy of ownership. Many people, for various reasons, want to own real estate without public knowledge. Perhaps they are a celebrity, politician (President Obama owns his house in the Chicago suburbs in a LT) or an individual that just doesn’t want the general public to know their private business. Such persons might also fear the wrath of disgruntled tenants, vendors or building inspectors. Further, if it were public knowledge that the richest man/woman in town owned local rental property perhaps rent increases and maintenance requests would be perceived differently.

Since title to property ownership is public information many real estate owners and real estate investors opt to take title to their real estate investments in LT’s. Land trusts hold title in the name of a Trustee and the trust itself. The Beneficiaries of the LT are not disclosed to the public and are only named in the Trust Agreement (a non-recorded contract between the Trustee and the Beneficiary). The Beneficial Owners can be individuals, a corporation, a Limited Liability Company or another trust. Consequently, the true beneficial holders can be buried deep for privacy and asset protection reasons (with no document on the public records indicating true ownership and control).

The beneficial interest holder of a LT is liable for what happens on the property that is held inside the trust. Therefore, most real estate investors will own the beneficial interest via another entity (i.e. a corporation or limited liability company). Unfortunately, some LT beneficiaries are unscrupulous and attempt to conceal ownership to avoid conflict of interest and/or building code violations. Consider for example, Chicago alderman, Thomas Keane, who owned an interest, through a land trust, in a corporation that obtained a lucrative parking lot with city owned O’Hare International Airport. The alderman did not reveal his ownership interest when he voted to grant the contract (see Land Trust Secrecy-Perhaps a Secret No More, 23 DePaul L. Rev. 509,511 n.10 (1973)).

The technique in using a LT to hide ownership has been raised to an art form in Cook County, Illinois. It is estimated that over 90% of the property owned in Cook County is held in a land trust!

So, why is it important to record title in an individual’s name or the Trustee of a LT? Everyone who owns property places in the public records some kind of document recording their interest. Failure to do so raises the risk that subsequent purchasers or creditors of a previous owner may deprive the present claimant of his title. But it is also true that the recorded title need not disclose the personal name or identify him/her in any way! Instead, a nominee, corporation, trustee or other entity may be interposed as legal title holder. Its relationship with the beneficial interest holder may be (as mentioned previously) represented by a private unrecorded document that is not disclosed to anyone without a court order or discovery process instituted.

Is it immoral to not reveal the true identity of the controlling party of a piece of real estate? Some would say yes but, once you own real estate in your own personal name and experience some of the inherent legal risks you might be more understanding of those who do not want to own title in their individual name. Real estate ownership carries risk and sometimes excessive oppressive risk. While it is true that real estate ownership should carry with it some responsibilities (i.e. to maintain, comply with building codes, meet minimum housing standards, etc.), it should not be a target source for contingency fee lawyers and other frivolous legal attacks.

Furthermore, some real estate investors are concerned about Federal and State government intrusion in their lives (read: Patriot Act). Since there is no requirement to itemize specific property ownership details on your IRS 1040, holding real estate in a LT keeps the investor’s name out of all city, county, state and federal databases.

Since Land Trusts are not registered at the State or Federal level (unlike Limited Liability Companies -LLC’s and Corporations), they are the last useful non-entity entity available to owners of real property (land, improved property, commercial buildings, residential buildings, real estate options, real estate contracts, etc.). Yes, LLC’s and Corporations offer more direct asset protection benefits, but the Land Trust provides more privacy of ownership and indirect asset protection benefits. Therefore, it is best to link Land Trusts, LLC’s and Corporations together for the best of both worlds.

By structuring the Land Trust with an LLC or Corporation as the beneficiary, the real estate investor creates a unique structure with symbiotic benefits. For example, changing ownership of the beneficial interest (being held by an LLC), would effectively change the owner/control of the title holding LT without public notice or knowledge. Not only would this be a deeply private transfer of ownership and control but taxing authorities would be left out of the loop resulting in substantial tax savings!

Some theorists contend that property should be owned only in individual names so the “public good” can be served by holding owners accountable for what occurs on property (liability for people and condition). At the Federal level some even refer to two statutes of importance: The Freedom of Information Act (1976) and the Privacy Act of 1974 as reasons to compel ownership in the name of individuals and not trusts (or at least limit the privacy of Land Trust’s through legislation).

In Arizona, for example, the fear of organized crime prompted action by its legislature (see New York Times, March 30th, 1976 at 20, col 4). The AZ legislature enacted, as an amendment to the recording statute, a provision requiring every conveyance to or from a Trustee to include the names and addresses of the beneficiary or persons representing the beneficiary. However, it is unclear under this law if the Trustee of another Trust (i.e. a personal property trust), a corporation, or a nominee can be listed as the beneficiary and still comply with the law.

In Illinois the land trust statutes seemed to have evolved from legislative apprehension over slum housing problems and corruption among public officials (as with the previously stated Thomas Keane case). A 1963 law enacted in Illinois requires full disclosure of a Land Trust beneficiary “within 10 days of receiving a notice or complaint of violation of any ordinance relating to condition or operations of real property affecting health or safety.” The apparent intent was to force disclosure of the “true owners” of buildings with housing code violations. While there is a $100.00 per day penalty for non-compliance of the law, no- where does it spell out specific procedures to compel disclosure.

Iowa’s primary concern when it comes to privacy of ownership is the possibility of hiding ownership of property by nonresident aliens. Under Iowa law (see Property Rights of Aliens under Iowa and Federal Law, 47 Iowa L. Rev. 105) a nonresident alien may not own more than 640 acres located outside the corporate limits of a town or city (see Iowa Code Ann. 567.1). However, the prohibition on nonresident alien ownership in Iowa speaks of “acquiring title to or holding” real estate. It is unclear whether indirect ownership (i.e. via a Land Trust or nominee) is prohibited. It is also interesting that the Iowa law mentions no penalty for non-compliance!

What is interesting about some states attempt to control LT information (and force disclosure) are their statutes are event-based. The event that triggers disclosure is the transfer of title into or out of the trust. Occurrences after conveyance into the trust, such as beneficiary changes or amendments to the trust agreement, need not be disclosed.

There is an inherent conflict between those who want to own property privately and the interests of the general public (and some governmental agencies). While it is true that some nefarious characters will attempt to use a land trust to avoid code requirements, tax re-assessments or the due-on-sale clause, a vast majority will not. Most people who utilize a land trust do so with good intentions in mind. (i.e. estate planning, privacy concerns, asset protection, etc.).

Certainly public officials should not be allowed to use land trusts to defraud the public (and building code violators should be held accountable), but in the typical residential real estate sales transaction the buyer is protected via the seller disclosure laws, title companies and attorneys involved in the transaction (regardless of whether a land trust is used or not). Further, the liability for the property held inside a land trust flows through to the beneficiary. While an LLC or other entity can be the beneficiary to a land trust, ultimate liability is not avoided by using a land trust.

Because our American legal system has run a muck and contingency fee lawyers abound, I do not favor the free flow of information as it relates to property ownership. Since there is no Federal land trust law (only state-by-state), the likelihood of legally compelling LT beneficiaries to disclose information voluntarily about the title or condition of their property is unlikely in most states, if at all.

How to Locate Deadbeat Dads and Moms in the USA

[ad_1]

My fascination in finding people using the web goes back over 10 years ago when I was trying to find my ex-husband who had skipped out on his court ordered child support and become one of those deadbeat dads. During this time period he had been on the run for years already. Deadbeat dads and moms are everywhere in the USA and our government organizations are so under staffed and overwhelmed we can count on them for little help in searching for these deadbeat dads and moms much less in helping to collect our children's support monies.

Child Support Enforcement America's Shame

My deadbeat dad's case had been turned over to the County Child Support Enforcement agency, abruptheless in the 15 years they managed my case they managed to collect very little for my kids. I had learned early on that the only time they actively pursued these deadbeat dads cases is when the custodial parent was collecting State Aid for Needy Families and that's one road I always tried to stay away from. How preposterous is that anyway ?! They will pursue these deadbeat dads if the custodial parent and children are forced to collect state aid but in collecting any monies owed it would all be given back to the state to repay what they had given the family. So the kids basically are living at a substandard level of living on State Aid as the custodial parent fights to make ends meet.

After 22 years, my 2 kids are now grown and my daughter has 3 kids of her own. Yet their deadbeat dad has "prided himself" on getting over on the system all these years. He labored under the table, had his family cover for him, all the techniques that these deadbeat dads or moms use to get out of legal responsibility.

I was surprised to recently get a letter from the State of Iowa, his home state, informing me that my case here in Colorado had been turned over to them. I have not had any exchange with my local Child Support Enforcement agency in years. They never really did a thing to help my youngsters or me. So now here's a letter from Child Support Enforcement in Iowa that they have located him and I am in line to receive money!

Attempting to be aware of what was happening I called CSE in Iowa only to hear that yes, they located him, but as far as collecting money, that had not happened and they had no idea when, or if, it would! An added major upset for me from Child Support Enforcement.

I decided to take matters into my own hands and used an on the internet People Search service which costs a small payment and searched for him by his Social Security number. Within minutes I had the information in my hands that Child Support Enforcement had not been able to find in 22 years. Having found his place of employment and assets owned I now had the details needed to go to court and obtain a conviction against him and his properties.

I know there are thousands, if not millions, of kids in this country who suffer because of these deadbeat dads and deadbeat moms who run out on their ethical and legal responsibilities. When home PCs became widespread my curiosity in locating my deadbeat dad started to expand. At that time these kinds of People Search engines were not yet offered and how it would have assisted me to have had the access then that we all have in the present day!

This People Search engine makes it possible for a number of different kinds of searches. By filling out the fields in the search box on the search engine you'll be given free access to anyone's location, deadbeat dads & moms included. Usually every other people search company out there, like Intellius and US Search, charge you $ 20 to $ 30 for these same kind of free results.

If you need to do a more comprehensive search on deadbeat dads or moms then for a small cost you can also search by social security number, you can do background checks, search for email addresses, search by phone number, reverse phone search, criminal records checks and more.

It's just astounding what you can find on the internet. You can even locate anyone on the popular Social Network sites like Facebook. I would still have paid the small fee years ago if this choice had been there for me and it would have meant that my kids would have had lives that were so much better than what they had.

So when it's deadbeat dads, deadbeat moms you want to find or would just like to find a lost acquaintance, old boyfriend or girlfriend, old school pal, distant family member this Search Engine can help you.

Wrastling With Patches and the Good Ol Days

[ad_1]

Every now and then its a good thing to stop, take a step back, and just review some of the highlights / lows of our time here, and to remember that lifes challenges do not begin and end with whether or not to buy 100 or 125 embroidered patches.

I think one of my highlights was being a pro wrestling referee for about maybe 100 nights worth of bouts in the Upper Midwest when I was in my 30s, and still pretty agile. I worked in some beautiful places, some real pits, and met some unsavory characters, and pretty cool people, but overall … a TERRIFIC experience for a young single guy.

I was there the night when it took 10-14 officers to subdue Andre The Giant in Cedar Rapids … he just snapped that night. He wore this hUGE leather jacket, and not one area of black leather was to be seen … covered in big biker patches, and French and American Flag patches. For years and years as a kid growing up in northern Minnesota I watched AWA wrestling on Saturday nights broadcast from a station in Fargo, ND.

My brother and I watched in total horror as Mad Dog Vachon and his brother The Butcher just about killed Dr. X and The Crusher … the Vachons hammered The Crusher's head into the turnbuckle till he bled … and kept hammering, and hammering..The Crusher's wounds actually spurted blood in time with his heartbeats according to ring announcer Roger Kent (one of the best of all time!). To a couple of 7 and 9 year old's that life changing things.

FAST FORWARD 25 years, and I'm working matches in Iowa City, whos there … THE MAD DOG. We met backstage and had a wonderful visit. Later that night his vehicle ran out of gas on the freeway, he started walking to a station, and got hit by a drunk driver and lost his leg. Hes one of the good ones in this world. My mom, then a nurse at the University of Iowa hospital system, took care of him in the hospital and I visited him a couple times … he could not have been more hospitable … I guess that goes to his being a gourmet chef !!!! A classic bad-things-happen-to-good-people thing.

Before we met, The Queen was ringside when Jesse "The Body" Ventura, made his ring entry bedecked beautifully in his hot-pink feather boa, pink butterfly tights and rhinestone sunglasses. He and his partner Adrian Adonis took on Verne Gagne and son Greg in a cage match. She got married on Saturday and on Sunday they were watching wrestling on TV, called for tickets. The call to the box office right before them was to cancel a pair of ringside seats. They went to the bouts, got their ringside seats, and I'll be darned if Jesse did not hand her the sunglasses he wore to the ring. During some of my matches I was a "heel referee" and wore them to the ring. I had my manager, Julie Crabb, a very accomplished embroiderer by the way, accompany me to the ring amid a chorus of BOOO's and flying half full beer cups.

In Duluth MN, Nick Bockwinkle tossed me over the top rope, and then bought me dinner (well, a cheeseburger and a stale beer) later that night to say OOPS. He later told me he, "mean to throw me THROUGH the ropes, not over them." He was the first one to use The Piledriver back in the day …. now it's pretty common on nationally telecast wrasslin 'shows, but then, WOW … it SHOULD have been banned in 17 states the way he did it. Wicked Nick is one of the most articulate people I ever knew. He was a second generation wrestler, and picked up a few things from his dad, and mic-work was certainly one of them.

His partner Ray "The Crippler" Stevens was probably the meanest person I ever worked. He not only pitched me over the top rope more than once, but he really enjoyed hitting people … me in particular I guess. He knocked me out COLD in Devils Lake ND, Duluth, MN, AND Thunder Bay Ontario …. an international bad-guy … no love lost on my end … there are people here that think I'm still concussed Because of the repeated blows to the head …. I'm knot sew shure …

Out of all of them though, my favorite might be Mighty Joe Macko, "The Last In-Line of the Wrestling Gagne Family." If you've ever seen Verne or Greg Gagne, and then looked at Joe, you'd know how silly that introduction is / was. THE CONSUMMATE JOBBER (he worked hard, but never won a match … got beat up, and stomped, but I NEVER raised his hand), in that he'd ref one bout, wrestle in another, and put on a mask and ACE bandage his abundant belly for the Battle Royale at the end of the night. He'd bring an accordion backstage to the locker room and entertain those of us that needed more entertainment and had, without a doubt, one of the worst singing voices ever. But he's an entertainer and was in the best business in the world if you like to entertain people.

I guess the point of all this is this: Take just a moment and look back. As I write this, I'm flooded with memories of hot sweaty ring gigs, cold showers, and going out in -20 temps to a cold car and driving to the next night's show … not such a great memory, but some I 'll cherish until the day I leave this earth … except for the knot on my head.

Your Passive Radon System Sucks – Or Does It?

[ad_1]

Let's make this simple. If you have a passive radon system installed in your house and it does not have a fan blower and it's not popping outside your roof or the outside of your house, you have a PVC pipe. That's it. You have a white PVC pipe that the contractor decided to install to help in the radon mitigation process. The problem is, it is not doing anything. A part of the definition of "Passive" according to Webster's dictionary is, "Of or being an inactive."

Here's some more great news for you since you think you are ahead of the game when it comes to radon mitigation, while the US EPA and the state of Iowa require that anyone installing an active radon mitigation system be properly trained, certified and licensed by the State, there are no training or certification requirements made on the contractor installing a passive system.

Sometimes these passive radon systems are installed in such a way as to make them unusable or ineffective. The only way to tell is to cut or disconnect the PVC pipe where it goes through the concrete to investigate what is below. When the PVC pipe is installed it is supposed to go through the sub-slab, or concrete and reach the dirt, gravel or sand below. When professional and licensed radon mitigators install an active radon mitigation system it is typical for them to dig through the sub-slab and then dig out or remove up to 10 gallons of dirt, gravel or sand to properly create a good suction point. They are creating a cavity to communicate with the rest of the dirt, gravel or sand below the concrete.

So now what do you have to turn your PVC pipe into a radon mitigation system? Here are some general guidelines and remember depending on your state, installation should be done by a licensed radon mitigation specialist. Most passive systems are built as part of the house so they typically go up through the house within the walls, through closets or along the corners of a room. The PVC pipe can sometimes be exposed the entire way. The PVC pipe should end through the roof and have the proper roof flashing and sealing as to not create leaks. Some contractors will install the passive radon system just as far as the attic, but will not penetrate through the roof. The purpose is to get the radon gases out of the house, so going through the roof is essential.

One of the most essential items needed to make your passive radon system active is the electric blower fan. Running electricity to the attic to connect the fan is rarely done as part of a passive radon system. The size of the blower fan could vary depending on what kind of material is under the concrete. Once connected to the PVC pipe it will now suck or blow the radon gas out from below the foundation out through the vent pipe and away from your home.

If you are a visual person imagine the PVC pipe as a giant straw running through your house to the gravel below the foundation. The gravel stones are like ice cubes in a drink. The blower fan is sucking up the harmful radon gas from between these stones like the liquid of a drink. Now your passive radon system is active and really does suck, but in a good way.

If you are concerned about radon gas and not sure if you should install a radon mitigation system the first thing to do of course is to test your home. Home radon test kits can be bought at most hardware stores or home improvement big box stores like Lowes. Your local radon mitigation companies will also have some test kits for purchase.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency has recommended the action level of 4.0 pico Curies per liter of air. To put that into perspective though 4.0 pCi / L is equal to half a pack of cigarettes a day coming into the house. Are you okay with that? Are your kids and pets okay with that? Getting your radon levels as close to zero should be the ultimate goal when trying to protect your family. Radon gas is the number one cause of lung cancer for non- smokers.

After you get your radon test results back and if they are high it's time to mitigate. If you have a passive radon system installed review the article again and see what you will need to get the system working. Silence radon before it silences you.
